Rink Closure Brings City Together

CALGARY, ALTA – Hockey Calgary is grateful for the volunteers and staff from associations and rinks across the city for stepping up and helping out a community in need when the Brentwood Sportsplex announced they have to shut down their rink.

In spite of ongoing efforts over the past two weeks, the Brentwood Sportsplex has suffered a failure of its chilling unit and will have to close effective Monday, Feb. 6.

“It’s never easy when something of this magnitude happens in our city,” said Todd Millar, president, Hockey Calgary. “Luckily, due to an amazing hockey community, people have come together and offered up ice. We have already been able to reschedule 50 per cent of the games in less than 24 hours, now that’s a team effort.”

With a lack of ice in the City of Calgary, it affects more than just hockey. To lose one sheet of ice leaves hundreds of people without figure skating, ringette or adult recreation games.

Brentwood Sportsplex supplies over 30 ice times per week to Westwood Minor Hockey teams alone. Westwood has 31 minor hockey teams from Timbits through Junior.

If teams have a game at Brentwood beginning February 6th, it will be rescheduled. Once new details have been established, the Hockey Calgary and Central Zone Referee Committee web sites will be updated with new dates.

“Hockey Calgary continues to ask teams reach out and offer to share their practice ice with a Westwood team, as the majority of their ice was at Brentwood. This will leave them with virtually no ice time during this crucial time of the season,” said Millar.
