Body Checking - Motions

Motion One

Current Wording of Bylaw/Rule:

NONE

Proposed Wording of Motion/Bylaw/Rule:

Effective the 2012/2013 season body checking will be removed from the age category of peewee.

Rationale for changing the Bylaw/Rule:

Kids who body check at the pee wee level are three times more likely to suffer from a concussion or major injury.  Body checking will be taught in practices to allow development in a safe controlled environment.  The body checking committee spent one year gathering all information which referenced the Carolyn Emery study which studied the affects of body checking over five years.

Motion Two

Current Wording of Bylaw/Rule:

NONE

Proposed Wording of Motion/Bylaw/Rule:

Effective 2013/2014 season body checking will be removed from Bantam excluding elite and community divisions 1 through 3 and effective 2014/2015 body checking will be removed from midget excluding elite and community divisions 1 through 3.

Rationale for changing the Bylaw/Rule:

This decision will create a safer environment for all children playing minor hockey at the community Bantam and Midget age categories.  Hockey Calgary members through the membership survey showed 73% were in support of a safer environment.  Intuitively the Divisions of 4 and below resemble the traditional “House Leagues” of other associations in Canada.
