Midget AA Minor Provincial Hockey Championships Opening Ceremony Kicks Off Friday

For Immediate Release

CALGARY, AB — Premier Prentice, popcorn and provincial championship hockey all come together at WinSport Friday evening for the Opening Ceremony of the Midget AA Minor Provincial Championships.

The first 350 people through the doors to attend the Opening Ceremony at WinSport Arena A (Markin MacPhail Centre) at 5 p.m. will get a free bag of popcorn and be dazzled by lights, music and the top-10 teams hailing from every region of the province that earned the right to battle for hockey supremacy.

"For the second year in a row, Trails West Hockey Association is honoured and pleased to host the Provincial Championships," said Greg Robertson, President of the Trails West Hockey Association of the Midget provincials that will come to Calgary and Markin McPhail Center at WinSport (Canada Olympic Park) from March 19-22.

More than 170 hockey players ranging in age from 16 to 18 will participate with family and friends cheering them on, including two Calgary teams: Trails West Midget 1 Wolves, which just won the Calgary City Championships and also won Esso Minor Hockey Week and the team’s major rival, Glenlake Midget 1 Hawks, which won the Calgary league championships. The other teams are Peace River Stampeders, Lloydminster Blazers, Airdrie Lightning, SEERA Icemen, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Strathcona Warriors, Beaumont Braves and the High Rover Flyers.

"Congratulations to all the teams participating in the championship," added Robertson. "Many hours of practice, games and tournaments have been committed to in order to attain your goal of making it to the provincials.  For those athletes who are in their final year of midget, this is a great way to culminate your midget career.  I hope all athletes, coaches, managers and fans enjoy this provincial championship and display positive sportsmanship. Have a terrific experience and best of luck!”
