The Fastest Hockey Player
Who’s the Fastest Hockey Player on the Fastest Ice in the World!
- Joint initiative between Hockey Calgary and the Calgary Speed Skating Association for Atom & Bantam players only
- Cost $20 per participant
Date: Thursday June 20th, 2019 at the Olympic Oval starting at 5:00 PM
Athlete eligibility
- Atom players born 2009-2010
- Bantam players born 2005-2006 – max of 16 male; 16 female
- Must be a member of Hockey Calgary & have played in the 2018-19 season or be registered for the 2019-20 season
- Maximum registration 100 players in total
Events
- Atom
- 100m dash, 4 at a time (mass start, similar to ski-cross style), elimination format, first 2 move on to next round, last two move to repechage or are eliminated. Each player will have at least 2 races.
- Bantam
- Same format as Atom, except it will be a lateral/crossover speed drill. Cones will be placed at regular intervals and players will have to race around the cones for the 100m distance.
Equipment required
- Helmet with cage
- Neck guard
- Hockey skates
- Hockey gloves
- No hockey sticks permitted
Rules
- Safety of players is the priority
- Start command will be ready, set, then gun will sound
- No false starts - False start will automatically result in a last place finish in heat
- No blocking and no touching other players. Players must stay in their own lane. Any contact will result in a last place finish in heat
Schedule
- 4:30 – 5:00 PM: Registration, helmet cover & package pick-up
- 5:00 – 5:15 PM: Player warm-up
- 5:15 – 5:30 PM: Parent & player meeting to explain format & review rules
- 5:15 – 5:30 PM: Ice resurfacing
- 5:30 – 8:30 PM: Races with ice resurfacing time permitting.
Detailed race schedule will be sent to participants once registration is finalized and brackets are built.
Awards will be about 10 minutes following conclusion of last race
Awards
- There will be medals for the top three males and the top females from each age group. Winners will also receive a $100 gift card, 2nd place finishers a $50 gift card and 3rd place finishers a $25 gift card.
- Atom male and female winners will also receive a complimentary entry to Hockey Calgary’s Multisport Camp in August 19 – 22, 2019.
- The top 8 males & females in each age group plus another 8 randomly selected participants will receive a free “Try Speed Skating” session – available from July 1 – Dec. 31, 2019. A special registration code will be e-mailed to winners to register on-line for free at a speed skating session of their choice.
